The 'Thanksgiving with Ross Cobb' 4-pack
Let one of the finest winemakers in the West Sonoma Coast dress up your Thanksgiving dinner. I first met Ross Cobb when he was the winemaker at the legendary Hirsch Vineyards winery, but I didn’t realize he was also making world-class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from his tiny family winery down the road, too. Well, his namesake wines have finally become available in Georgia, and they also happen to make outstanding pairs for turkey and dressing.
In this pack, you’ll get four wines, one bottle of each:
Riesling, Cobb Wines, ‘Abigail’s Vineyard’ Sonoma Coast, CA, 2021
This gorgeous dry Riesling came as an awesome surprise. In addition to mastering Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, in recent years Ross has embraced Riesling as his new forte. In 2019, he grafted several acres of Pinot over to Riesling and this is the inaugural vintage. Very few American Rieslings express minerality like this—it’s flinty/stony but also has plenty of shiny fruit flavors of green apple, pears, and limes. It’ll light up your sweet potato casserole, that’s for sure.
Chardonnay, Cobb Wines, ‘H. Klopp Vineyard’, Sonoma Coast, CA, 2019
Everyone always assumes lighter-bodied reds are the best pairing for turkey and stuffing, but have you tested it with top-notch Chardonnay? It’s a dead-on match. Something about Chardonnay’s ability to present both richness and fresh acidity really hits all corners of the meal’s flavors, and this wine’s touch of Burgundian savoriness and spice will keep you coming back for more.
Pinot Noir, Cobb Wines, Sonoma Coast, CA, 2021
Ross’s Pinot Noirs are certainly the stars of the show. This one contains fruit from 5 different vineyard sites in the West Sonoma Coast—way up there where it’s foggy, cool, and blessed with massive redwoods (and not much else). This is serious, stately Pinot that can stand up next to anything from the USA or the Cote de Nuits, but it’s also showing great upon release.
Pinot Noir, Cobb Wines, ‘Wendling Vineyard’, Anderson Valley, CA, 2019
One of Ross’s single-vineyard expressions, this time from the western-most corner of Anderson Valley. Spicy and not lacking power, it matches juicy berry flavors with red flowers and forest flavors. It gets scores in the high 90s from the critics but he made just 200 cases, so you may not find it elsewhere. That alone should impress your aunts and uncles.
