The 'Frilulian Symphony' 6-pack
This offer is your chance to try six different wines from three of the finest producers in quite an exciting corner of Italy, the high hills of Friuli at the country’s northeast border.
Friuli maintains a strong reputation for stellar white wines, but the area has a broad palette of both red and white grape varieties to work with, some of which are as obscure as they are thrilling. It is a region that plays all the notes very well.
The pack introduces you to two whites from ultra-classy house Borgo del Tiglio (white Burgundy fans will be in a happy place with these), a white and red from hearty charmer Venica, and two knockout reds from native grape specialist Ronchi di Cialla. These perfumed, subtle reds absolutely stole the show upon tasting—wow, don’t miss these rare beauties.
The ‘Friulian Symphony’ 6-pack $265:
Collio Bianco, Borgo del Tiglio, 2021
This dry, vivacious blend of Friulano, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling is richly-textured and a touch floral with a hint of grassiness. Really impressive, unusual stuff.
Friulano, Borgo del Tiglio, 2017
Mellow, medium-full in body, and full of serious minerality, this white is ready for your dinner table.
Malvasia, Venica, ‘Petris’, 2021
The rare and fine white grape Malvasia Istriana. It’s voluptuous and salty-floral, but also mouth watering. A brief soak on the skins before its fermentation really brings out loads of spice.
Merlot, Venica, 2021
Merlot has been in Friuli for hundreds of years and the region’s best expressions of the grape are surpassed only by fine Bordeaux. I love Venica’s Merlot because it shows Merlot’s exquisite perfume and elegance rather than seeming baked. Great with filet mignon.
Schiopettino, Ronchi de Cialla, 2017
This winery was started in the 1970’s with the aim of highlighting the area’s indigenous grapes. Schiopettino was thought lost until Ronchi di Cialla brought it back. This tastes like whole-cluster Volnay. It’s amazing. Spiced plums, pepper, flowers, oh my.
Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Ronchi de Cialla, 2013
Refosco is slowly emerging as the highlight red grape of Friuli, but the longstanding problem is that traditional styles really need some age to be ready. Thankfully, this one has an 11-year head start and is showing beautifully. It’s so, so classy. Fans of mature Bordeaux bottles will be thrilled.
