Young Marc Soyard at Domaine de la Cras has been raising a lot of eyebrows lately. His Chardonnay from vines right outside Dijon is among my favorite Burgundy whites I’ve had in a good while. Forget about ‘oaky/buttery’, this instead is lively and wild, showcasing Burgundy’s magic match of fruit texture and stoniness.
Olivier Merlin’s Bourgogne Pinot Noir is from our favorite recent vintage, 2021—and it reminds me why I fell in love with Burgundy in the first place. It doesn’t hit you over the head. It’s a seducer, a charmer. You want to chase it around the glass. It’s pure and delicate. Hundreds of years ago, the Duke of Burgundy understood that people would pay extra for Burgundy Pinot’s “aromatic superiority” and made laws to protect the grape’s use. A few whiffs will serve as evidence of why.
If it’s satisfaction you crave, you won’t have to look further than David Duband’s Pinot Noir from the famed village of Nuits-St. Georges. David is one of the elite talents in the Cote de Nuits, the finest place on earth for Pinot Noir. This 2020 explodes on the palate with as much spice and savory as gorgeous layered fruit.
