‘Burgundy 102: the Premier Crus’ 4-Pack

$375.00
sold out

Wow, we are ecstatic to return to one of our very favorite subjects: the wines of Burgundy. A few months ago, we offered an intro-level pack to get you acquainted with drinking from the most venerated land on earth. Now, we’re taking you to the second level.

This pack shows you two whites and two reds, each from Premier Cru-rated vineyards in hallowed villages of Burgundy and each hand-hewn by a different top-talent winemaker. These are also all from the thrilling 2021 vintage, a harvest whose sense of classic purity and balance may not come around again very soon (if you bought our ‘Tour de 2021 France’ pack months ago, you’re in the know already). Folks, wine-drinking doesn’t get a whole lot more pleasurable than this. From here we can see the summit.

‘Burgundy 102: the Premier Crus’ 4-Pack $375

Chablis 1er Cru, Samuel Billaud, ‘Sechet’, Burgundy, France, 2021

We showed you Samuel Billaud’s entry-tier village Chablis in the Tour de 2021 pack, but his wine from the beloved Premier Cru site called Sechet in Chablis is on another level. Electrically delicious, with lightning-flash acidity and no lack of pure, sheeny fruit and minerals, this reminded us why great Chablis makes us freak out and showcases everything we love about the 2021 vintage.

Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Cru, Chateau des Quarts, ‘Clos des Quarts’, Burgundy, France, 2021

Chateau des Quarts is a collaboration between two masters of Chardonnay, Dominique Lafon (whose family winery, Comtes-Lafon, is arguably the finest in Meursault) and Olivier Merlin (who is one of the Maconnais’ best). Their production is tiny (Georgia only got a couple of cases) and Lafon is a superstar, so get yours before it disappears. The village of Pouilly-Fuissé only recently had a handful of its vineyard sites upgraded to Premier Cru and one of them is the walled vineyard that belongs to this old chateau, so Dominique and Olivier have it all to themselves.

Beaune 1er Cru, Domaine des Croix, ‘Les Cents Vignes’, Burgundy, France, 2021

Although young David Croix is not quite as famous as, say, Dominque Lafon, his resume is extremely impressive, including being claimed by the late-great importer Becky Wasserman as her favorite young winemaker. His Pinot Noirs are extremely elegant, careful, and perfumed and this example from some of Beaune’s finest vines is a real thing of beauty.

Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru, David Duband, ‘Les Broc’, Burgundy, France, 2021

You may remember David Duband from the ‘Intro to Burgundy’ pack, where we showed off his Nuits-Saint Georges red. He also owns some terrific vines in Morey-Saint-Denis, which is in the heart of the finest terroir on the planet for Pinot Noir. ‘Les Broc’ blends fruit from four small Premier Cru parcels and clues you in to what a serious master of this grape Duband has become. This is certainly a bottle you could age for many years if you wanted, but it is already expressive of black cherry, limestone, and a kind of whole-cluster savoriness that only the very best winemakers know how to wrangle.
